Many Corporate Employees Achieve Self Empowerment Through Team Building

By Brian Young

The way in which businesses are run have change in many ways over the past decade or two. Employees no longer merely follow instructions received from above but are instead organized into self directed teams. These teams each have certain goals to achieve and every member of the team has a clearly defined role to play. However, for such a system to work a high level of trust and cooperation between all members of the teas are required. To this end, employers routinely promote self empowerment through team building.

Teambuilding exercises have become very popular. Teams go to a venue away from the office for a day and often even for a few days in order to achieve specific goals. The purpose of the exercise may be to motivate the members anew, to allow them to get to know each other better, to relax after achieving major objective or to learn skills in certain areas, such as how to deal with conflict.

Teambuilding exercises have become so popular that an entire industry has sprung up. Event organizers, venues, caterers, entertainers and a host of other professionals in the hospitality and human resources development industries have all realized that this is a lucrative market and that many companies are willing to spend huge amounts on these exercises. Many venues have even purchased costly equipment and constructed facilities that cater specifically for teambuilding events.

Experience has shown that teambuilding exercises work better if they are controlled and lead by an independent professional human resources development expert. These event organizers are highly paid individuals but their services are comprehensive. They scout suitable venues, devise programs that will help ensure that the objectives are met and they make sure that every single detail related to the excursion is arranged professionally. They remain involved prior to, during and after the exercise.

An event leader and organizer needs to know exactly what it is the client wishes to achieve during the teambuilding exercise. He also needs as much information as possible about the individuals that will participate in the event. This information will allow him to select a suitable venue, make provision for the individual preferences of all the members and to design a program that will help towards the achievement of the event objectives.

Members of the teams scheduled for such excursions should be given the opportunity to voice their preferences. Top organizers will always have more than one option to choose from. They should also be briefed in detail regarding the objectives of the exercise and how the organizer plans to help them achieve those objectives. If this is not done, the very purpose of the exercise may be ignored.

A teambuilding exercise cannot be deemed successful unless some form of evaluation takes place. The organizer should carefully evaluate the contributions made by every participant and ideally group feedback sessions should be scheduled at least once a day. After the event, a report by both the organizer and the participants should be submitted and suggestions regarding future development needs can be made.

The business environment is competitive and only those companies that can remain innovative can hope to thrive. This, in turn, requires innovative and motivated teams that consistently achieve their goals. Teambuilding exercise can be very valuable in this regard.
