Facts About Aircraft Nuts And Bolts

By Eric Sullivan

If you are an aero mechanic student, then you could be pretty cognizant about the complicated description of these craft parts. You might also know its operations and detailed functioning. Studying its specific would help you with your future career. Today, let us know more about aircraft nuts and bolts.

We have to know that the proper functioning of these parts is very crucial in the overall performance of the aircrafts. To prevent major accidents that would cause injuries and death to the passengers, aero mechanics are tasked to ensure the correct functioning of vehicles before they permit its operation. One of these important parts is the nut.

There is no specific indicator or marking on these nuts. They could be recognized only through the category of their steel luster or aluminum color. They can also be indentified through the shade of its brass or the strength of insert once the nut is locked. If in doubt of its type, you can easily determine it through its construction.

These nuts have been divided in two specific categories which is none locking type and the self locking type. These none self locking devices are the nuts that should be locked with the help of external apparatuses. These apparatuses include safety wires, pin cotter, and locknuts. On the other hand, the self locking kind contains a lock feature as part of its functioning.

These nuts are classified according to their appearance. They come in two categories named as self locker type and non locking type. These nine locking nuts are the ones that must be locked using external tools. These tools refer to safety threads, cotter pins, and nut lockers. Moreover, we also have the self locking devices.

Several kinds of self lockers were already built and these are commonly used in most countries. Common usages are the antifriction and attachment of bearings and control levers, accessory attachments, inspections of anchorage nut holes and minor openings from tank installations. It also includes the connecting of box rocker coverings and stack exhaust. These procedures were already applicable in most aircrafts.

The castle kind which is coded as AN310 is commonly used with a driller shank, hex bolt heads, bolt clevis, eyebolt, drilled bolts head or stud. It is rugged carefully and is able to withstand strong tensions and loads. The slots, which are termed as castellation, are manufactured to support a pin cotter or safety wire. This castellation nut shear, coded as AN320 is made to support devices like bolts clevis and taper threaded pins.

Anti friction levers are used as an alternative to prevent its occurrence. These device controllers must be properly clamped into the main structure to eliminate the possibility of dangerous joint rotations. That is why experts must do a double check from time to time to avoid dangerous consequences.

The AN310 code and AN320 is used for shearing only. Meaning to say, these are made possible because of the castellation procedures. Professionals should be more particular about these procedures to avoid engine failures. They should be sharp and strict with the details for a safer aircraft operation.
