There are many different ways to meditate, but one that has gained popularity in western culture is color meditation.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of Chakras, they have their origin in the Indian religions of Jainism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Hinduism cites seven Chakras as specific energy sources. There is an individual color associated with each of the seven. By focusing on the colors of the various Chakras, the individual brings her body, spirit, and mind into balance.

The base of the spine houses the root Chakra. Red is associated with it and represents the individual's life force. Focusing on it rids you of frustration and anger. The root Chakra stimulates the mind and body. It increases circulation. The sacral Chakra is found in the vicinity of your naval. This Chakra stimulates the nervous system and is associated with creativity and physical attraction. Orange is the color assigned to it.

The solar plexus Chakra is associated with yellow and located below your breastbone. Yellow is a sign of mental alertness and vitality. When you focus on yellow, you improve your sense of optimism, happiness, and improve analytical thought. Green is the color of the heart Chakra. You will find it in the center of the chest. Green is for healing. Concentrating on it will increase your sense of peace and love.

Self-expression and confidence finds its energy source in the throat Chakra. It is represented by blue. The color of the third eye Chakra is indigo. You will find it above and between your eyebrows. Peace of mind is what you may feel by focusing on indigo. A the top on your skull is the crown Chakra represented by violet. Violet is universal consciousness.

Experts advise newcomers to this form of meditation to start slowly. You may only be able to focus on one color, and before you begin meditating, you need to think about what is most concerning you. It may be a relationship in trouble or a physical ailment that you are grappling with. With physical difficulty, you need to focus your meditation on the Chakra that is located in the area of the problem.

Once you have mastered the basics, you can go on to something more complicated. Find the most comfortable position for yourself first. Visualize gold light above you. Pull it down into yourself and feel the relaxation as the light fills your being. Begin by focusing on the red root Chakra and work your way up to the violet crown.

Meditating is a great way to quiet your mind and get relief from the stresses of everyday life. People have been convinced of its value for hundreds of years. It's no wonder that a discipline the focuses the mind, benefits Alzheimer's sufferers.
