The Steps On Cleaning A Faux Sheepskin Rug

By Robert Turner

A sheepskin is the hide of sheep and this may also be referred to as lambskin. Leather types are usually tanned with fleece intact such as pelts but sheepskins do not have these. There are already manufacturers that have been using these materials for the production of baby rugs and invalid rugs, slippers, covering, pelts, gloves, hats, clothing, automotive seat covers, and footstools.

A wool or a fleece can be considered as hypoallergenic according to many medical professions. Sheepskins are considered as insulators themselves and that is why, they have the ability of drawing the perspiration away from wearers to fibers. In the history, a faux sheepskin rug and also sheepskin boots, vests, and coats are very common to people. Here are them following steps to clean these items properly and maintain their quality.

Filling the tub with a tepid warm water and adding an appropriate powder or liquid solution for the type of material. And since you are having the fleece or wool material, make sure that you are using a delicate wool solution by adding only a small amount of it. In this way, you can maintain the quality of the wool because you are not washing it with a solution that can possibly damage it.

Using a hot water for washing maybe fine but this must not be used excessively. This can bring some unnecessary disadvantages. These cons would include causing the wool pile to felt, making the process of rinsing become difficult, setting some stains that are hard to remove, damaging the leather and shrinking it, and causing color loss.

When an item is being washed, use a woolskin shampoo and conditioner instead of wool detergents. Typically, these wool detergents have some toxic chemicals such as phosphoric acid, peroxide, phosphates, chelating agents, sequestering agents, bleach, alkali, enzymes, and triethanolamine. These chemicals may cause harm and damage to leather.

Place the rug into the tub fleece in a side down position. Make sure to immerse it fully in the warm water. Similar to washing any other clothing, you may leave the rug and soak it in the water with solution in order for the dirt to be removed by the delicate wash and in order for the smell to stick on it. Thus, there is no need for you to really scrub it which can be one of the causes for it to be worn out and damaged.

Next is hand washing the item gently. There are times when some dirt or stains are left, so never scrub the item or brush it because this can possibly cause damage. After the stains have been removed, rinse the item well using a fresh water. Wash it continuously until you can see clear water having no bubbles.

After all these processes, drain first the sheepskin before you remove it from water. Combing the fur can be done to prevent ties which look ugly. Combing also can maintain the softness of material even after drying. One important reminder is the avoidance of brushing harshly to prevent it to fall down and comb it one direction only.

For drying you may either lay it flat, with the fleece in side down, or you may also hang it for drip dying and see to it that you are keeping it away from the direct heat of the sunlight. An excess heat may possibly damage the wool. You can also use the dryer with no heat and set it into a gentle or fluff cycle only.
