Why Two Way Radios Remain Highly Useful

By Kathleen Carter

Smartphones rule the ether, connecting people through a mostly reliable communication channel. They are handheld phones with digital functions that make them highly versatile and portable. They can access the internet with Wi Fi, can send pictures, can be used for group calls or messaging, and have that most unique text messaging function.

While the cell phone rules, many consider portable handheld radios part of an older era of equipment. They are also known as transceivers, which means they can transmit and receive, connecting to people with their own sets. This most durable of gadgets is an example of miniaturization, like all the good old fashioned Dallas two way radios that many people prefer.

Before cell phones they were the handiest short range communication gadgets around. CB or ham units used the same technology, had longer range but took up a lot of space. Both have their own enthusiasts. Handheld transceivers, even with the cellular technology of today, have never been edged out entirely. They are still used a lot, mainly by businesses, construction, security personnel and government agencies like the police department.

For people in the know, the reasons for having them still are many. The first thing that comes to mind is the much lower prices. And then you do not have to take out a contract to use one. It is easy to handle, you just press a button to receive or talk to another one with the same tool.

These handy items have it over cell phones in several ways. In these days of advanced telecommunications, they do not take much to operate, can work without the help of other infrastructure like phones do. Plus, people who know will tell you how these are so strong, even when dropped badly or immersed in water.

In Dallas area, the most critical facilities use handheld radio gadgets, and have no plans of changing their communications with phones. These places could be hospitals, malls, utility plants, factories, military facilities, ships and construction complexes. Also the personnel who use them are often key to an entire operation. Without their units, services or operations will break down.

The following are the technical considerations. The sets could be analog or digital, and always two way. This means you can only broadcast or receive, and cannot do both at the same time. These units can either be state of the art or have different power settings, depending on whether their use is for open places or inside buildings. Some really nifty stuff can be attached to them, like sirens, lighting fixtures, light bars and even digital camera recorders.

Other nifty stuff on the technical side are GPS tracking for other handheld gadgets and the same tracking system that can be had for a number of vehicles. Easy to remodel and enhance, they could be attached to digital repeaters and sound or public address systems. Their many uses have led companies to study the use of apps that mimic how they work but are still testing the market.

For Dallas, like other places in the country, there are many ways to acquire them. Most can be store bought. As mentioned, most people find them very affordable, especially when ordered wholesale. All of them have service warranties that last for years. After everything else, they are also entering a new digitally enhanced age that still rivals or even leads cellphone use.
